Virgin's Lament / Maiden's Prayer
Composer: Badarzewska-Baranowska / Bob Wills / Richard Greene

Virgin's Lament was played on at least two occasions by Jerry Garcia in 1974 with the Great American String Band. The group for these shows were David Nichtern, David Grisman, Richard Greene and Buell Neidlinger plus Jerry Garcia.

Virgin's Lament is a variation, by Richard Greene, of the traditional tune The Maiden's Prayer.

A Maiden's Prayer was originally Modlitwa dziewicy Op. 4 a composition for piano by the Polish composer Tekla Badarzewska-Baranowska. It was popularised in the US as a fiddle tune by Bob Wills who recorded it as an instrumental which was released in the late 1930s. Subsequently Wills wrote lyrics for the piece and recorded a vocal version in 1941. It became a standard of the country music repertoire. On recording it is often credited to Wills or Traditional.
