Roanoke was performed by Old & In The Way in 1973.

Joe Ahr was a songwriting pseudonym used occasionally by Bill Monroe. Roanoke was first recorded by Monroe on December 31st 1954 and released as a single. Monroe described writing the song as follows, "I was in Roanoke playing at the Old American Theater there. It was when I was having some tooth problems and I didn't feel like going out to eat, so I just stayed there and wrote that number.
