Mule Skinner Blues
Composer: Jimmie Rodgers / George Vaughn

Mule Skinner Blues was played by Old And In The Way, Ratdog, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros, Phil Lesh & Friends, the Wildwood Boys, Scaring The Children, Robert Hunter solo and Kingfish.

The original version of the song was recorded by Jimmie Rodgers on 11th July 1930. This was released on a single with the title Blue Yodel #8 (Mule Skinner Blues). Subsequent early recordings used the title Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel #8). This was then shortened to Mule Skinner Blues which is the title used on many later Jimmie Rodgers, and other, releases and is the title is used on this site. The song also occurs as Muleskinner Blues and, if used on a recording, that title is retained on the individual recording listings.

Mule Skinner Blues played a prominent role in the career of Bill Monroe. It was his first post-Monroe Brothers recording on October 7, 1938 and the first song he performed at the Grand Old Opry in 1939. In 1950 he recorded a new version titled New Muleskinner Blues (featuring Vassar Clements who would later play with Jerry Garcia in Old and In The Way). He recorded two more versions after this but reverted to the original name.
