Notes
The first Chuck Berry recording as group leader.
The song was initially called Ida Red and was partially based on a traditional song of that name. The name was changed to Maybelline, probably by Leonard Chess of Chess Records, to give it less of a rural image. This name was then changed to Maybellene to avoid using a name that was used for another product.
The song was recorded by Chuck Berry, Johnnie Johnson, Ebby Hardy and Willie Dixon on May 21, 1955 during a session that involved many takes.
Released on Chess 1604.
