The song sometimes occurs on Garcia tapes and set lists as Angels Laid Him Down or Angels Laid Him Away or similar titles. A few recordings also use similar titles.

Mississippi John Hurt first recorded the song on December 21, 1928. On many recordings writing credits are Mississippi John Hurt but this is not the case.
