Columbus Stockade Blues
Composer: Traditional

Performed by a group that included Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Leon Russell, Mary Egan and Doug Sahm on November 23, 1972 at the Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin, TX.

The origins of this song are uncertain. The earliest recording appears to be the Darby and Tarlton version from 1927. They are sometimes credited with writing the song but it is more likely that is was an existing song at that time. Many later recordings are credited to Jimmie Davis (sometimes with Eva Sargent) who popularized it in the 1940's.

The "Columbus Stockade Blues" Historical Marker, located outside the former Columbus Stockade buildings, on Tenth Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in Columbus, commemorates the song and states that it was written and recorded by Darby & Tarlton in 1927.
