Doin' That Rag is taken from the Grateful Dead LP Aoxomoxoa. At the time of the recording of this LP the Grateful Dead comprised;

Notes
This was the second of the Warner/Reprise 'Record Show' compilations. The first was called Songbook hence the Son Of Songbook subtitle here. This was a non-commercial, cooperative release. The liner notes explain;
Non-commercial because these affairs were conceived as a means of acquainting you and yours with artists of whom you'd likely remain ignorant without a little shove of this sort.
And cooperative because neither we nor our artists are making a cent on the deal - $2.00, after all, scarcely covers the costs of putting together a handsomely-packaged (permit us a little immodesty) double album.
It is indeed a handsome package. Double gatefold release with a 4 page booklet attached to the inner spine of the gatefold. The booklet lists the contents and provides brief information about each performer or band. The entry for the Dead is as follows;
The Grateful Dead, mere mention of whom evokes memories of Ken Kesey's Trips Festivals and posters by Kelly and Mouse and raunchy 1966 psychedelia and free concerts in Golden Gate Park, are probably not the first American rock ensemble you'd expect to find on our shitkickin' side. But a long hard listen to Aoxomoxoa (Warner album 1790), whose title may be read from either direction and is the work of Rolling Stone contributor and beauty queen Adele Novelli calls the 'magical' Dead configuration (which is distinguishable from the unmagical one because the oft-maligned Mr. Pigpen sings with the latter) convinced us that, at least in this most recent incarnation, that's where they belong.
The last time the Dead dropped us a line they were Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir (guitars and vocals), Phil Lesh (bass and vocals), Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart (drums and percussion), Tom Constanten (keyboards) and Pigpen (congas and unmagical vocals).
The Doin' That Rag that appears here is an abridged (because current recording technology permits one only so much playing time per side of an LP) version of the long cut of the same name that appears on Aoxomoxoa, whose executive engineer was Bob Matthews. The vocal is Jerry's.
In addition to the booklet the record sleeves display a view of Burbank in 1917 and information about other releases in the loss leader series.
