The book is in two sections. The first The Haight-Ashbury Scene examines various aspects of Haight-Ashbury. This section includes the Grateful Dead chapter. The second section Tribal Gatherings cover The Trips Festival, The Summer Solstice, Love Pageant Rally, and The Human Be-In.

From the back cover of the 1995 edition:

"During Hashbury's prime, photographer Gene Anthony recorded the happenings with his camera, met and became friends with those who paraded through the writhing landscape: Janis Joplin, Bill Graham, Jefferson Airplance, The Grateful Dead, Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary, Stewart Brand, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and a host of others. The Summer Of Lopve is a reliving of a brief period; A fantasy, an idealism that isolated the flower children from the realities of a harsh world until they were faced with the realities of murder and the war in Vietnam."
