El Cerrito High School Phil Lesh played in El Cerrito High School marching and concert bands after starting to play trumpet instead of violin.

Berkeley High School Phil Lesh played trumpet in the band, the orchestra and the dance band at Berkeley High School.

1958-60 : |
College of San Mateo Phil Lesh wrote for and played trumpet in the College of San Mateo jazz band. A tape of the band exists with Lesh playing on five pieces: I'll Remember April; Wail Frail; Finnegan's Awake and two whose titles are not known.
